the empiricist ...
thinks he believes only what he sees,
but he is much better at believing
than seeing

G. Santayana

I cannot tell if what the world considers 'happiness'
is happiness or not.
All I know is that when I consider the way
they go about attaining it,
I see them carried away headlong,
grim and obsessed,
in the general onrush of the human herd,
unable to stop themselves
or to change their direction.

All the while they claim to be just on the point of attaining happiness

Behold, O monks, this is my last advice to you.
All component things in the world are changeable.
They are not lasting.
Work hard to gain your own salvation.

-- The Buddha

So you should see all of the fleeting world;
A star at dawn, a bubble in the stream;
A flash of lightning in a summer cloud;
A flickering lamp, a phantom, and a dream.

-- The Diamond Sutra
